Rick Williams

Rick Williams

LLB Auckland University 1984

Rick studied at Auckland University's Faculty of Law, graduating in 1984. He worked for six years practicing Commercial Law with an inner Auckland city law firm, gradually growing a client base of his own in doing so. Rick decided that he wanted autonomous control of his future in the profession and had the opportunity to start small on the North Shore of Auckland in 1992. He was joined by his wife Lianne in the quickly growing practice 2 years later, which meant they could balance their business aspirations and their home lives, including five children, on their own terms.

They also wanted to grow a client base where their client’s knew their personal needs were as important to Rick and Lianne as their commercial concerns. It is particularly rewarding for them to now be acting for a second generation, as their  client’s children enter the business world, buy a house or otherwise seek assistance.

Over the years, Rick’s expertise has enabled him to assist clients across a broad range of services, and he is always up for a challenge with respect to the more complex transactions or situations. Rick also has a special interest and expertise in Sportslaw and has represented various domestic international sports people and sports administrations over many years. He was a founding member of ANZSLA, the Australian New Zealand Sports Law Association in 1991 ( and was the Chairman of the first the ANZSLA Conference held in New Zealand in 1994. Rick was seconded to review the All Blacks WRC contracts in 1995, during the highly charged and sensitive intrusion of professional rugby.

Rick’s sporting background is in rugby league having started as 5 year old with Ponsonby in Auckland, followed by 13 years with the Ellerslie Eagles and 10 years at Otahuhu, retiring in 1996. From 1981 to 1995 he played at Premier Grade for these clubs. He represented NZ Universities on the 1984 tour to UK and France and in 1986 was a member of the team that won the inaugural Universities Rugby League World Cup. Rick is also a New Zealand Tag Football age group representative having represented New Zealand in every World Cup and Australian test series since 2005.

Rick also holds an international rugby league coaching accreditation and is a mod football referee on the weekends.

Keeping fit and keeping up with his three sons and two daughters, whom play various sports is a priority.
